The Newcastle United fans here in the Transfer Tavern are oh so nervous ahead of tonight’s game with Everton after their rather dreadful run of form of late. Indeed, a loss tonight could see Rafa Benitez and his men slide into the bottom three before the January transfer window.
With that in mind, our punters clad in black and white are in desperate need of a boost while they calm their nerves by drinking our bar dry. Well, thanks to comments made by Rafa Benitez in yesterday’s press conference (as relayed by Ben Dinnery on Twitter) our resident Geordies are feeling a bit better about tonight.
Benitez says Jamaal Lascelles was "nearly there" in terms of starting against Leicester. Hints that the [c] could return. "Having players with character and personality when things aren’t going wrong is good. I haven’t picked the team yet.” #NUFC

As revealed by the Spaniard, skipper Jamaal Lascelles could be in line for a much-needed return to the starting XI ahead of tonight’s game at St. James’ Park. The 24-year-old has missed the Magpies’ last few games, in which they’ve conceded many goals, though was on the bench against Leicester.
With Newcastle needing to fix their defence, the return of their captain would be a big boost for the Magpies in our bar.
It says a lot about Lascelles’ improvement in such a short space of time that Newcastle are now in a position they desperately need him. The former Nottingham Forest man was left out of the first team of the season, though now his return represents a huge boost.
Should give Newcastle’s team so much more confidence.
