Newcastle United supporters have been pretty happy in the Transfer Tavern in the last few weeks after seeing their side pull clear of the Premier League relegation zone having lost just one of their last six league games.
Rafa Benitez’s men were just two points above the bottom three after their 3-1 defeat to champions-elect Manchester City back on January 20, but they have since then won twice and drawn three of their six games to put a healthy gap between themselves and danger. The Magpies produced an impressive display to beat Manchester United 1-0 at St James’ Park last month, before backing that up with a massive 3-0 win over fellow relegation contnders Southampton in their last league outing, a result which moved them up to 13th place in the table and five points clear of bottom three.
Subsequently, there have been many buoyant Newcastle fans in the Tavern in recent times, several of whom are sincerely hoping that their side have enough to remain in the top-flight come the end of the season.
In the meantime though, there has been much for our resident Magpies supporters to discuss, not least recent reports linking them with a move for United defender Luke Shaw.
The 22-year-old has struggled to make an impact since moving to Old Trafford back in 2014, with just 62 appearances to show for his three-and-a-half year stint in the North West.
Yes, injuries have played a part in his difficulties, as has a seemingly strained relationship with manager Jose Mourinho, which took another turn for the worse at the weekend following the Portuguese’s scathing criticism of the left back following United’s 2-0 win over Brighton in the FA Cup.
As such, reports have since emerged that the England international could be on his way out of the club this summer, with Newcastle one side reportedly linked with ending Shaw’s United nightmate come the end of the season.
And this news has unsurprisingly stimulated quite a response from Newcastle fans on Twitter, yet they are instead full of praise for defender Paul Dummett, with many of the opinion that the Magpies man is better than United’s Shaw…
Do we actually need him? Dummett has been immense, can’t believe I’m saying that..

Does dummet need someone to wash his boots?

Signing him to lace Dummy’s boots? @PaulDummett

I would rather have Paul Dummett than Luke Shaw. Shaw can attack, no doubt about that, but he can’t defend for toffee. Would rather a good defensive full back than a flying attacking one #NUFC

Don’t need Luke shaw, when we’ve got Paul dummett.

Would do a job as back up for Dummett
