Newcastle: Fans debate Shelvey and Matty Longstaff facing Leicester

Many Newcastle United supporters have been debating whether or not Steve Bruce should rotate his line-up to face Leicester City in the Carabao Cup to include Jonjo Shelvey and Matty Longstaff.

Shelvey was benched for Newcastle’s trip to Tottenham Hotspur at the weekend after featuring in each of the Magpies’ opening Premier League fixtures, with Bruce opting for a change of tack by deploying his side in a 5-4-1 formation.

This left the £13.5million-rated (TransferMarkt) midfielder out of a spot in the squad, as Isaac Hayden and Sean Longstaff were his head coach’s preferred options to combat the threat presented by the likes of Erik Lamela, Moussa Sissoko and Harry Winks.

Matty Longstaff, on the other hand, is yet to make his first-team debut, but impressed many of the club’s supporters and coaching team with his efforts during United’s pre-season tour of Asia, and is said to be in contention for a full senior bow in the Carabao Cup (Chronicle).

Places may be up for grabs in the midweek encounter, as Bruce has confirmed that six first-team players are doubts for the Second Round clash with the Foxes after departing North London with various knocks.

“The exertions of Sunday have affected some,” the Newcastle head coach noted, via quotes by the Chronicle. “A lot had a difficult pre-season, while some are coming back.

“We have to assess them. But I’ll pick a team that I think can get through.”

Along with first-team players like Shelvey and Longstaff, Bruce will also be able to call on those omitted from his 25-man Premier League squad against Leicester, meaning the likes of Achraf Lazaar, Jack Colback, Jamie Sterry, Rolando Aarons and Henry Saivet could also be in contention for minutes.

It remains to be seen who, if any, are selected to face Brendan Rodgers’ King Power Stadium natives on Wednesday night.

Newcastle fans are clearly divided over who they would like, or expect, Bruce to include going by these tweets…
