Plenty of Newcastle fans gave credit to defender Federico Fernandez after his performance this afternoon, with the 30-year-old expressing qualified satisfaction with his team’s 0-0 draw on Twitter [via @pajarofernandez].

Although Steve Bruce’s side were unable to find a way past bottom club Norwich at St James’ Park, the outcome may well have been worse had it not been for a crucial intervention from the Argentina international. At one stage, Teemu Pukki was through one-on-one with Martin Dubravka and looked set to score, only for Fernandez to get back and clear his goal-bound effort (as per BBC).
That was one of five clearances made by the Magpies defender today and he also won four tackles, the joint-most in Bruce’s team, as well as making two blocks and having more touches of the ball (75) than any of his team-mates. [via SofaScore]
Chronicle Live reporter Lee Ryder wrote that the 30-year-old made “some important contributions” and referenced his “excellent recovery tackle to deny Pukki”. These Newcastle fans on Twitter also lauded the defender’s display against the Canaries this afternoon:
You played well today and that slide kept us in it, well done fede very well done sir 👏👏👏
