Newcastle United will be looking to the future with their Premier League safety confirmed – however, fans in the Transfer Tavern could be set to say goodbye to one of their youngsters.
And that’s because, according to a report in The Shields Gazette, the Magpies are set to release Paul Woolston at the end of the season, despite having trained with the first team on a number of occasions.
Manager Rafa Benitez had reportedly invited the 19-year-old to train with his senior side after he was impressed with his performances whilst out on loan. The manager had stated that he had been good in training sessions – however, it appears he did not do enough to earn a stay at St James’ Park.
The former England Under-18 international goalkeeper will now look to rebuild his career elsewhere, and he will hope it is not too long before he is playing regular football and thus continuing his development.
Landlord’s Verdict: The Magpies are going through a complete restructure of their youth system and it seems that more players are leaving than coming in, which is likely to cause the Newcastle locals in the Tavern some concern.
Despite wanting immediate success with the first team, the punters in the bar will be wanting the club to build a solid foundation for their players to come through the ranks, rather than having to spend money on players from other sides that will command a large fee.
