Newcastle United supporters in the Transfer Tavern are relishing the rest of the summer transfer window, what with it looking increasingly likely that Rafa Benitez will remain the club’s manager.
The Spaniard did a sterling job in leading the North East giants to tenth place upon their return to the Premier League this season, this all despite spending very little in the transfer window. However, for the Magpies to move to the next level under the former Chelsea and Liverpool chief, additions will be needed over the summer, but it remains to be seen whether owner Mike Ashley is indeed willing to fund those signings during the close season.
But with the West Ham job, a job Benitez was linked with, taken by Manuel Pellegrini, it does look as though the 54-year-old will stay as Newcastle boss, which means attentions among our resident Magpies fans have turned to who their team may sign this summer.
And with reports suggesting that Crystal Palace are considering cashing in on striker Christian Benteke this summer, the North East heavyweights should capitalise on those developments by moving for the £19.8 million-rated ace (as per Transfermarkt), as he’d without doubt be an upgrade on striker Joselu.
Ultimately, the Newcastle forward did little this season to suggest that he could be the man to lead the line for Benitez’s side next time round, with the 28-year-old netting just four times in 30 Premier League appearances for the Magpies.
And while the former Stoke City man does have some all round capabilities ideal for a Benitez team which often plays one up top, he simply doesn’t make the most of the chances presented to him to suggest that he can be the man to fire them further up the division next term.
Remarkably, Joselu actually scored more than Benteke did this season, but when one considers the Belgian’s Premier League career as a whole, and indeed his all round capabilities as a striker, there is only one winner.
Prior to this term, the 27-year-old exceeded ten Premier League goals a campaign in all but one of his five seasons in English football’s top-flight, and that was when he bagged nine for Liverpool in his one and only campaign at Anfield – in comparison, Joselu hasn’t scored in excess of ten league goals in any of his last eight seasons.
Yes, this term wasn’t his finest, but it’s clear that Benteke knows where the goal is at Premier League level. And alongside brilliant aerial ability, as well as adeptness at bringing others into play by holding the ball up and creating space for his teammates, he’d be ideal in Benitez’s preferred system of playing one upfront.
Clearly, while this season appears to be an anomaly, Benteke would without doubt be an upgrade on the ineffective Joselu, which is why Benitez and the Newcastle hierarchy must seek to capitalise on recent developments by making a move for the linked-away striker this summer.
