Newcastle must capture linked-away £10.8m-rated ace to seriously strengthen defensive ranks

Newcastle United supporters have been pretty quiet in the Transfer Tavern this week after seeing their side go down 1-0 at home to the Premier League’s bottom side West Brom on Saturday to suffer a second successive league defeat.

Rafa Benitez’s men went into their encounter with the Midlands outfit off the back of losing 1-0 at Everton in their preceding league outing, a loss which brought to an end their impressive four-match winning streak. And the North East heavyweights were unable to get back to winning ways on Saturday either as a Matt Phillips strike was enough to clinch all three points for the Baggies, which just about keeps them in with a chance of avoiding the drop this season.

Consequently, there have been many despondent Magpies supporters in the Tavern in recent times, several of whom are hoping their team can pick themselves up and bounce back with victory at Watford on Saturday.

In the meantime though, there has been much for our resident Newcastle fans to get their teeth into, not least recent reports suggesting that Manchester United are willing to let defender Matteo Darmian leave the club this summer.

And the linked-away £10.8 million-rated ace (as per Transfermarkt) simply has to be of interest to Magpies boss Benitez, as his arrival would undoubtedly strengthen the Newcastle defensive ranks heading into the 2018/19 campaign.

Ultimately, while the North East outfit have been pretty solid defensively for much of the season, some of our resident Magpies supporters reckon that the full back ranks could do with being bolstered over the summer.

DeAndre Yedlin has performed solidly at right back but doesn’t always have the conviction in the attacking areas, while left back Paul Dummett is also decent defensively but offers very little in the final third of the pitch.

And with few options besides the aforementioned duo, one senses that for Newcastle to push on next season, they need better quality full backs who are able to mix defensive discipline with attacking intent. And Darmian could be that man.

The Italy international has only made six Premier League appearances for the Red Devils this term in struggling to dispose Antonio Valencia of the right back slot, to the point that he has occasionally filled in at left back to do a job for Jose Mourinho’s side.

Yet he did have two sustained runs in the first team last season to underline his credentials at Premier League level – ultimately, one cannot be a bad player if they are turning out for United on a regular basis.

And with a relentless ability to get up and down the flanks, and indeed get into good areas in the attacking third of the pitch, the 28-year-old would likely offer more than both Yedlin and Dummett at full back, and thus undoubtedly be an upgrade on the defensive duo.

As such, with Darmian’s United career seemingly at an end, Newcastle must seek to capture the linked-away star in a bid to strengthen their defensive ranks ahead of the 2018/19 season.
