Newcastle United supporters have been pretty disappointed in the Transfer Tavern in the last couple of days after seeing their team lose 2-1 at Watford on Saturday to suffer a third straight Premier League defeat.
Rafa Benitez’s side went into their encounter in Hertfordshire off the back of losses at the hands of Everton and West Brom, results which brought to an end their impressive four-match winning streak. And the North East giants were unable to return to winning ways on Saturday as first half strikes from Roberto Pereyra and Andre Gray set Javi Gracia’s Hornets on their way to all three points, with Ayoze Perez’s response in the second period not enough to inspire a Newcastle comeback.
As such, there have been many despondent Magpies supporters in the Tavern in recent times, several of whom are hoping their team will respond with an improved performance against Tottenham at Wembley this evening.
In the meantime though, there has been much for our resident Newcastle fans to get their teeth into, not least recent reports linking their side, amongst others, with a summer move for West Brom’s Craig Dawson.
And if Benitez’s side are serious about moving to the next level next season, they simply have to go all out and win the summer race for the £15 million-rated (as per The Daily Mail) defensive ace.
Ultimately, while Jamaal Lascelles has excelled in the heart of the Magpies backline this term, there have been some doubts regarding who to partner the Englishman, what with Florian Lejeune and Ciaran Clark often interchanged by manager Benitez.
As such, one would suspect that the Spaniard isn’t yet sold on either of them to be the main partner for his captain (although Lejeune may have stolen a march having appeared in each of their last ten league games), whereas Dawson could well be that man.
The 28-year-old may well have been part of a West Brom side relegated from the top-flight this term, but he has undoubtedly been a shining light in a desperately disappointing campaign for the Baggies, be it at centre back or indeed at right back.
Thus, while Benitez may see him as the ideal man to form a formidable partnership with Lascelles, he could also see him as the next right back in his side, as although DeAndre Yedlin has performed solidly this term, there have also been some unconvincing moments.
And having the option of utilising Dawson in various positions across the back four, without hindering his capabilities too greatly, should be exactly what Benitez is on the lookout for this summer.
Newcastle haven’t got and indeed had the biggest squad in the Premier League this season, so if they are to push on and perhaps sustain a top ten, maybe even European, push next time round, Benitez needs accomplished options throughout the squad – Dawson would bring that to the defensive ranks.
And were they to fight off various other interested parties to land the £15 million man, it would also be a clear statement of intent from the club’s hierarchy that they are willing to back the Spaniard to achieve his goals at St James’ Park.
As such, the Magpies simply have to go all out to win the race for Dawson during the close season.
