Newcastle fans in the Tavern are keeping their fingers crossed that Mike Ashley will finally relinquish control of the club, but his price tag seems to be scaring off many potential new owners.
With Premier League safety secured, Newcastle can look ahead to the summer where they will look to strengthen their squad and challenge for the European places next campaign.
Manager Rafael Benitez hasn’t had many funds to play within the transfer market and had to rely on the loan signing of Martin Dubravka to add some depth in between the sticks at St. James Park.
The temporary signing of Dubravka could be made permanent at the end of the season, but Newcastle should take a look at other potential targets and crown a new number one. With just one year on his contract this summer, the Magpies should target Italian shot-stopper – Mattia Perin.
Perin is highly regarded as one of the best young goalkeepers in the world currently playing for Genoa in the Serie A and is valued at £13.5m by Transfermarkt.
Capped once by the Italian national team, the 25-year-old has averaged more saves per game than Gianluigi Buffon and Gianluigi Donnarumma in the Serie A thus far. He is comfortable coming off his line, a trait we’ve seen grow increasingly more important on these shores of late.
Perin has previously been linked with Manchester United during the uncertainty regarding David De Gea, though the Spaniard looks like sticking around in the North West these days, so perhaps the Magpies need to be ambitious and move this summer.
He will have less than 12 months on his deal in the summer and Newcastle should move quickly and potentially nail down their No.1 for the foreseeable future for a great price.
Newcastle fans, would you prefer Mattia Perin to Martin Dubravka? Let us know!
