Newcastle must make an ambitious move for £22.5m-rated star if they fail to land Kenedy

Newcastle United supporters in the Transfer Tavern are eagerly anticipating their team’s clash with Arsenal in the Premier League on Sunday, what with their side embarking on a fine run of just one defeat in seven matches.

Rafa Benitez’s men go into their meeting with the North London giants off the back of an impressive 2-1 victory over Leicester City in their most recent league outing, in turn securing their third win in succession. And with just one loss in their last seven league games, our resident Magpies fans are supremely confident that their team will indeed avoid relegation this season, what with Benitez’s side heading into the weekend tenth in the division and ten points clear of the bottom three.

Subsequently, there are many optimistic Newcastle fans in the Tavern at present, several of whom are fancying their side’s chances against Arsene Wenger’s Arsenal on Sunday, what with the Gunners off the back of a long trip to Moscow just a few days previous.

In the meantime though, there has been much for our resident Magpies fans to get their teeth into, not least recent reports suggesting that Bayern Munich, Paris Saint-Germain, and Tottenham are interested in landing Kenedy this summer.

As such, there’s a genuine possibility that Benitez’s side will be unable to land the 22-year-old on a permanent deal, so instead they must make an ambitious move for Spurs’ £22.5 million-rated ace Erik Lamela (as per Transfermarkt) should they fail to sign Kenedy.

Ultimately, the 26-year-old has endured a testing time in recent seasons, what with a hip injury forcing the Argentina international to miss the best part of year between 2016 and 2017, returning in November in a 2-1 defeat at Leicester City.

And while manager Mauricio Pochettino is likely building up his match-fitness with some starts here and there, the winger isn’t quite commanding the regular first team football he was during the vast majority of the 2015/16 season, what with Christian Eriksen and Son Heung-min in particular performing well.

Add in January signing Lucas Moura, and potentially Kenedy from Chelsea in the summer, and things aren’t looking good for Lamela, who could seek a move away in a bid for more regular football.

And Newcastle should be ready to make a move for the 26-year-old were that to happen.

Obviously, failing to land Kenedy on a permanent deal will be a big blow to Benitez and his plans for next season, but luring Lamela away from Spurs would certainly soften the blow given the Argentine has scored 21 goals and laid on 37 assists in 147 appearances for the club.

In fact, Lamela was embarking on arguably his best run of form for the North London club prior to injury at the rear end of 2016, netting five goals and laying on nine assists in the 2015/16 season as Pochettino’s men finished third behind Leicester and Arsenal.

And were he able to re-discover that form in the North East, he’d be a huge asset to Benitez going forward, especially given how much of an impact Kenedy has made on a front line that have ultimately struggled for goals for much of the campaign.

Obviously, it won’t be easy for Newcastle to convince Lamela of a move this summer, but were Spurs to indeed secure a deal for Kenedy, the 26-year-old may feel that a move away is in his best interests.

And Newcastle could provide him with the first team football and thus the perfect platform from which to continue proving his worth in the Premier League.
