Newcastle United supporters in the Transfer Tavern are eagerly anticipating the 2018/19 Premier League season, what with their club seeking to improve upon their impressive tenth place finish in the top-flight last time round.
Rafa Benitez’s men deserve great credit for securing a top ten finish upon their return to the top tier last season, what with the Magpies winning the Championship title just 12 months previous. However, there were times of struggle for the North East giants over the course of the campaign, thus underlining their need to strengthen the squad this summer if they are to build upon last term’s tenth place effort, and perhaps return to their former glories.
As such, many of our resident Newcastle fans are speculating upon who their side should sign, with several intrigued by recent reports suggesting that Watford could seek to cash in on striker Troy Deeney this summer.
And with the Magpies clearly short in that department, Benitez and the club’s hierarchy must seek to capitalise on recent reports by moving for the £9 million-rated ace (as per Transfermarkt).
Ultimately, while the 29-year-old endured a testing campaign last time round, there is little doubting that Deeney would be an upgrade on current Magpies forward Joselu, who bagged just four times in the Premier League last term, none of which coming in 2018.
And with the Spaniard missing a whole host of guilt-edge chances along the way, it’s clear that he simply isn’t up to leading the line for the North East heavyweights this season, while the same could also be said of fellow forward Dwight Gayle, who may have the edge in front of goal, but doesn’t possess the all round abilities to play up top on his own.
However, Deeney has a good blend of the two, with the Watford forward having scored 24 goals and laid on 18 assists in 104 top-flight games for the Hornets, including reaching double figures in two of his three campaigns in the Premier League.
And while this term was somewhat of a disappointing one from his standards, he still managed to score more than Joselu in bagging five for Javi Gracia’s side, and one when considers what else the Englishman would bring to the Newcastle team, it’s a deal they have to strike.
The 29-year-old is excellent in the air and possesses great strength to hold the ball up and bring others into play – he is able to bully defenders around and as such is a nightmare to defend against.
Yet he also has genuine ability on the ball and in front of goal – one doesn’t reach double figures in a Premier League campaign if one isn’t a fine forward.
And with Newcastle crying out for someone like that as an upgrade on Joselu, they must seek to take advantage of recent reports by moving for the Watford striker this summer.
