Newcastle United supporters have been reasonably satisfied in the Transfer Tavern during the international break after seeing their team lose just one of their six Premier League matches preceding the two-week interruption.
Rafa Benitez’s men were just two points clear of the bottom three following their 3-1 defeat to champions-elect Manchester City back in January, but they have since then won two and drawn three of their six games to move up to 13th place in the table. The Magpies produced an outstanding display to get the better of Manchester United last month, and they made it back-to-back successes at St James’ Park last time out by comprehensively beating fellow relegation candidates Southampton, in turn moving five points clear of the South Coast outfit who currently occupy the final relegation place.
Consequently, there have been many thrilled Magpies fans in the Tavern in recent times, several of whom are hopeful that their side can continue their solid recent run between now and the end of the season, and thus secure their Premier League status.
Yet some of our resident Newcastle supporters are already looking ahead to the summer and what business their team may seek to do were they to stay up, and Mark Hughes’ Southampton are one club they could seek to raid if the Saints do indeed go down.
The 29-year-old made the move to St Mary’s back in 2014 and certainly played his part in helping the club to three successive top ten finishes in the Premier League prior to this campaign, with the Serbia international scoring 21 goals and laying on 35 assists in 153 games for the Saints.
And while this term hasn’t been his best in the final third, the attacker had prior to this campaign recorded at least six assists in all three of his prior Premier League seasons, and would certainly bring genuine quality to the Newcastle front line ahead of the 2018/19 campaign.
Even with his below-par season to date, Tadic has still managed three goals and three assists in the league for the South Coast club this term, which remarkably is one more direct contribution than Newcastle’s Ayoze Perez to underline that landing the 29-year-old would undoubtedly be an upgrade on the Spaniard.
And with success down the left flank, right wing, and indeed through the middle during his time at Southampton, the Serbian star would give Benitez plenty to think about in terms of his team selection, and were he to regain his early Saints form upon arrival in the North East, he would certainly endear himself to the St James’ Park crowd.
Ultimately, were the Saints to go down, one would suspect that Tadic, amongst many other talented Southampton stars, would seek to leave in a bid to remain in the Premier League, and Newcastle simply must be ready to land the 29-year-old were the South Coast outfit to indeed drop into the Championship.
