According to a recent report from The Sun, Bournemouth will open contract talks with Ryan Fraser in a bid to pin him down to an improved deal. The 24-year-old has been at the Vitality Stadium since 2013 after beginning his senior career at Aberdeen, and he is currently enjoying the best stint of his career on the South Coast in helping the Cherries to sixth place in the Premier League table.
And reports suggest that Eddie Howe’s men are seeking to open contract negotiations in a bid to ‘ward off potential suitors’, and this should be of interest to Newcastle United manager Rafa Benitez, as any inkling of Fraser opting against signing a new deal should prompt the Magpies boss to seek to replicate the Matt Ritchie transfer success by luring the 24-year-old to the North East.
Ultimately, the arrival of Scotland international Ritchie at St James’ Park back in 2016 raised a few eyebrows given he dropped down a division to join the Magpies, although he certainly did his bit in scoring 12 goals and laying on eight assists to help Benitez’s men win the Championship title.
And with three goals and six assists last term in their run to tenth place upon return to the Premier League, the 29-year-old has proven to be an outstanding addition to the Newcastle side and money very well spent indeed, with it somewhat surprising that he maybe hasn’t been used slightly more by Benitez this term in completing the 90 minutes just twice.
Nonetheless, Newcastle have certainly reaped the rewards from luring Ritchie away from Bournemouth little over two years ago, and were contract talks with Fraser fail to reach a satisfactory ending, the Magpies must seek to do something similar again by luring him to St James’ Park.
The 24-year-old has scored 19 goals and laid on 18 assists in 143 games for Howe’s side since his arrival over five years ago, which are by no means ground-breaking figures, but he has definitely taken his game to the next level in the early phase of this season.
The Scotland international has scored three goals and laid on three assists in just eight Premier League appearances for the Cherries to help them to sixth place in the table, with all six of those contributions coming in Bournemouth victories – not only does he contribute, but he contributes when the Cherries need it most.
And in a Newcastle side that has somewhat been devoid of ideas and have just struggled all round so far this term, that injection of dynamism and energy that Fraser brings could be exactly what Benitez’s side needs in their bid to move away from the bottom three.
Thus, the Magpies must be keeping a close eye on Fraser’s contract talks, as they should seek to replicate the Ritchie transfer success by making a move for the 24-year-old if an agreement with Bournemouth can’t be reached.
