Newcastle United supporters have been making a lot of noise in the Transfer Tavern this week after seeing their team take a massive step towards Premier League safety courtesy of a hard-fought 1-0 win over fellow strugglers Huddersfield Town on Saturday.
Rafa Benitez’s men went into their encounter with the Yorkshire club having won two and drawn three of their last six league games, a run of form which propelled them up to 14th in the division ahead of Saturday’s clash. And the Magpies are now seven points clear of the bottom three as an Ayoze Perez strike ten minutes from the end was enough to secure all three points for the North East heavyweights, in turn moving them up to 12th place in the Premier League table with just seven matches remaining.
Thus, there have been many thrilled Newcastle fans in the Tavern this week, several of whom are growing increasingly confident that their team will indeed avoid relegation this season, although they probably still need a win or two to completely banish any lingering fears of a return to the Championship.
In the meantime though, there has been much for our resident Magpies supporters to get their teeth into, not least recent reports suggesting that Tottenham are eyeing up a summer move for captain Jamaal Lascelles.
And while the North East club won’t want to let the defender go this summer, they may struggle to keep him and as such must have plans in place to replace him, with Swansea City’s £10.8 million-rated Alfie Mawson (as per Transfermarkt) someone who should be on their short-list.
Ultimately, the 24-year-old has proven his credentials at Premier League level ever since breaking into the first team at the Liberty Stadium in the early stages of last year, to the point that he is now a regular in Carlos Carvalhal’s side.
In fact, the Englishman has started all 31 of their league games this term to underline his influence on the Swans side, and he must be doing something right as Mawson was called up to Gareth Southgate’s England squad last month for friendlies against the Netherlands and Italy, although he didn’t feature in either.
Nonetheless, that itself is testament to the high-level performances the 24-year-old is producing for Swansea, be it making last-ditch blocks or organising the backline in his own box to coming up with crucial goals in the other, much like Lascelles has managed to do for Newcastle this season.
Thus, there are clear parallels to be drawn between the performances of Mawson and Lascelles this season, which makes it pretty clear that the Swans centre-back must be on Newcastle’s radar were they to lose Lascelles to Spurs this summer – Mawson can come in and replace the Magpies skipper.
As such, Benitez and the Newcastle hierarchy must seek to land the 24-year-old should Mauricio Pochettino’s Tottenham lure Lascelles away from St James’ Park this summer.
