Newcastle United supporters in the Transfer Tavern are very much looking forward to the summer transfer window, what with their side eyeing the additions that could take them to the next level in the Premier League.
Rafa Benitez’s side produced a fine first season back in the top-flight this time round in finishing in tenth place, accumulating 44 points from their 38 Premier League games. But given their obvious limitations over the course of the campaign, it’s clear that they will need reinforcements over the summer to build upon that tenth place finish, and potentially push for a European spot in the 2018/19 season.
As such, the attentions of our resident Magpies supporters are turning to potential summer signings, which is why they are likely to be intrigued by recent reports linking their club with a move for Porto winger Yacine Brahimi.
And were the North East giants to fail in their quest to re-sign Kenedy, given he has been linked with the likes of Bayern Munich and Paris Saint-Germain in recent times, they simply must turn to the £22.5 million-rated ace (as per Transfermarkt) this summer.
Ultimately, Kenedy had a huge impact on Newcastle following his January arrival on loan from Chelsea, with the 22-year-old scoring twice and laying on two assists in 13 Premier League appearances for Benitez’s side.
And while those figures are hardly ground-breaking, it was noticeable from his presence on the pitch and what he tried to do in the final third that he brought a great deal of creativity and flair to the Magpies side, something that would be missed next term were they unable to re-sign him.
And were a deal fail to materialise, Brahimi is the man they have to target.
The 28-year-old, albeit somewhat older than Kenedy, has enjoyed a stellar few years at the Portuguese heavyweights, scoring 12 goals and laying on 10 assists this time round to help them win the Primeira Liga crown, and indeed reach the last 16 of the Champions League.
And with seven goals last term, alongside nine in 2016 and 12 in 2015, it’s clear that the Algeria international is able to back up his outstanding talent with regular contributions, with his goals tally particularly impressive for a winger.
But with assists to match, having laid on 34 in 166 appearances for Porto, Brahimi is a creator as well, and as such appears to have everything to replace the talented Kenedy next season should Newcastle fail to land the Brazilian.
Yes, there will be many disappointed Magpies fans in the Tavern were their side fail to sign the 22-year-old again next term, but Brahimi is a hugely adept replacement, and one that could seriously make Benitez’s side better in the final third next season.
Thus, the 28-year-old is the man they have to target if a deal for Kenedy fails to materialise.
