Newcastle United are interested in signing German left-back Philipp Max, who Augsburg are valuing at £18 million, according to The Chronicle.
Having signed Joelinton, Steve Bruce is said to be hoping his squad will be strengthened further, with left-back and the wing among the positions he would like to see strengthened.
Whether the Magpies will be willing to meet the Bundesliga club’s asking price is unknown as of yet.
Max played 30 Bundesliga matches for Augsburg last season, scoring four goals and assisting twice – switching between left-back and left-wing throughout the season (via WhoScored).
While left-back is where he plays the majority of his games, having done so 22 times last campaign, he highlighted how effective he can be further forward when he scored twice in a 6-0 win against Stuttgart.
This type of flexibility can be useful for Newcastle, especially when it is considered they are looking for a full-back as well as a winger, so he could end up covering both areas throughout the season, as he did for Augsburg in the last.
The 25-year-old’s style of passing could benefit new signing Joelinton, as he played 1.9 crosses and 1.5 long balls per game last season, which would make the most of the Brazilian’s 186cm tall frame, which helped him win 2.3 aerial duels per game for Hoffenheim in 2018/19.
He is also astute defensively, making 1.2 tackles, 0.7 interceptions and 1.4 clearances on average last season.
This will be important for Bruce, as he will look to make his side as defensively strong as the Sheffield Wednesday side he managed for the second half of last season, as they kept nine clean sheets and conceded just 17 goals in the 18 games of his tenure.
This would be a good signing for Newcastle and while it could cost a little more than they would like, Max has the potential to cover two positions in the side where Bruce feels improvement is needed.
He has the ability to help the side out both in defence and going forward, so it seems like he would be a brilliant fit.
