Newcastle United are finally out of the relegation zone of the Premier League after a November revival.
The Magpies have put their dismal start to the campaign behind them and finally moved out of the bottom three following back to back wins over Watford and Bournemouth, although there is still plenty of work to be done if Rafa Benitez’s side are to continue their ascent up the table heading into the busy festive period. However, Newcastle fans will be buoyed by suggestions that owner Mike Ashley is set to give the Spaniard some valuable transfer funds to bolster his ranks in January.
Before Salomon Rondon’s recent spell, scoring goals had been a major issue for the Magpies. Benitez would be wise to strengthen his attacking options further in January to avoid a similar goal drought towards the end of the campaign.
One man who could improve their fortunes in front of goal is Wolfsburg hitman Wout Weghorst.
Valued at £9 million by Transfermarkt, the 26-year-old joined the Bundesliga side in the summer after racking up an impressive scoring record in his native Holland for AZ Alkmaar. Weghorst was one of the stand-out stars in the Eredivisie, netting 18 league goals – the second successive season he found the back of the net at least 17 times.
The Dutchman’s form in front of goal has continued in Germany, scoring five goals in his first 11 Bundesliga appearances. The 26-year-old is a tall, physical forward who would have no issues adapting to the physicality of the Premier League. As well as being a clinical finisher, Weghorst also holds the ball up brilliantly, bringing others into the game; he has two assists to his name this season.
Adding serious competition to Rondon in the attack would surely bring the best out of both forwards, with goals very much the order of the day were Benitez to lure the Dutchman to St James’ Park.
