The Newcastle United fans down in the Transfer Tavern are seething after Jonjo Shelvey’s red card cost them in their opening league game.
The Magpies lost 2-0 at home to Tottenham in their first game since since sealing promotion to the Premier League.
However, the defeat was marred by Jonjo Shelvey’s moment of madness a few minutes into the second half. After an altercation with Dele Alli, the stand-in skipper appeared to tread on the Spurs midfielder directly in front of referee Andre Mariner.
The England star was given his marching orders without hesitation and it’s not the first time the England has shown ill-discipline.
He was red carded for Swansea in 2014 after catching Liverpool’s Emre Can with an elbow. And more recently Shelvey was sent off for a bad tackle during Newcastle’s clash with Leeds last season.
While the England ace was also given a five game ban and fined £100,000 by Newcastle last term for a racist slur against Wolves player Romain Saiss.
Sunday saw the 27-year-old’s petulance let his teammates down again in what is an already thin Newcastle squad. For all his ability, he is a liability and a side like Newcastle simply cannot afford to risk Shelvey’s lack of discipline.
Rafa Benitez should find a replacement before it’s too late.
