The Newcastle United supporters in the Transfer Tavern are feeling confident about their chances of securing Premier League survival this season, and they are already beginning to look forward to the summer window as a result.
The future of Mike Ashley has been uncertain since he announced that he had put the club up for sale back in October 2017, but despite plenty of rumours regarding a potential takeover from Amanda Staveley, it remains unclear as to who exactly will be in charge next season. Naturally, the supporters are hoping that either Staveley or another financially strong investor will purchase the club and finally end Ashley’s unpopular tenure.
A new owner could instigate the beginning of a new era of success for the club and ensure that any danger of returning to the Championship becomes something of a distant memory, providing they spend their money wisely in the transfer window. Newcastle have a huge summer ahead of them; they need to bring in a handful of new players to ensure they steer clear of the relegation zone next season, but that will only be possible once they have resolved the ownership situation.
Regardless of who is in charge, Newcastle will need to bring in a new centre-back this summer to bolster their options in this position, and one man who could be available is Arsenal’s Calum Chambers (valued at £12.6 million by Transfermarkt). According to Gazzetta Dello Sport (via The Sun), Arsenal are interested in signing Sokratis Papasthopoulos from Borussia Dortmund this summer.
The arrival of the Greek international would further intensify competition for places at centre-back at The Emirates Stadium, to the extent where Chambers could find himself surplus to requirements. Considering Chambers’ potential at the age of just 23, it’s unlikely that Arsenal will be willing to sell on a permanent transfer, so the Magpies may need to consider completing a loan deal for his services.
Chambers has struggled for opportunities under Arsene Wenger this season due to a combination of injuries and competition for places, so he will be eager to move away from the club in order to change that next season. Newcastle are short of quality options at centre-back beyond their first-team pairing of Lascelles and Lejeune, but signing Chambers would be a perfect solution to that problem this summer.
