Newcastle fans are growing frustrated with the lack of transfer activity at St. James Park.
Rafael Benitez guided the Magpies to tenth in the Premier League last season despite little investment in the club. Owner Mike Ashley has been actively trying to sell the club but has received no viable offers thus far. He simply needs to back Benitez in the transfer market.
It’s no secret that the former Real Madrid boss wants to sign a striker this summer with the Magpies struggling for goals last season. Aleksandar Mitrovic is excepted to sign for Fulham with Dwight Gayle also out of favour. Benitez has targeted West Brom forward – Salomon Rondon.
Instead of signing Rondon, Newcastle should reignite their interest in Liverpool outcast – Daniel Sturridge. Valued at £13.5m by Transfermarkt, Sturridge was once considered one of the best forwards in the Premier League after hitting 21 league goals in 2014. However, injuries have plagued his time at the club since Jurgen Klopp’s arrival.
Sturridge has since slipped down the pecking order due to the form of Roberto Firmino and is surely available for around £15m this summer. With no interest yet, the Reds may be willing to lower their price tag and Newcastle would be wise to take advantage.
The former Chelsea striker remains a top striker and would guarantee goals if he can stay fit under Benitez. Still only 28-years-old, there is plenty of time for Sturridge to rediscover his best form and become a huge success on Tyneside.
