According to a report from A Spor, Georginio Wijnaldum has been linked with a move away from Liverpool this summer. The Netherlands international left Newcastle United for Anfield back in 2016 and has since played a key part in helping the Reds seal back-to-back top four finishes, although the arrival of Fabinho and Naby Keita during the close season looks set to push him down Jurgen Klopp’s pecking order.

And these fresh reports should be of serious interest to Magpies boss Rafa Benitez, who should seek to lure the £27 million-rated ace (as per Transfermarkt) back to St James’ Park in a bid to fill his squad with the quality required to move to the next level.

The Breakdown

Ultimately, the Magpies deserve great credit for securing a top half finish upon their return to the Premier League last season, but it’s clear from their limitations over the course of the campaign that reinforcements will be needed this summer if they are to build upon that effort.

And while the additions of Martin Dubravka and Ki Sung-Yueng have gone some way to bolstering their squad, one still wonders whether the quality is there to take the club forward and potentially into the European spots this term – Wijnaldum’s arrival would certainly aid in that quest.

The 27-year-old has appeared 92 times for Liverpool in the last two years following his move from Tyneside, and he has been particularly influential in the heart of Klopp’s midfield, both in terms of going forward and helping out in attack, and indeed in a more defensive role.

In fact, the Dutchman laid on nine assists in 36 Premier League appearances in the 2016/17 campaign to help the Reds return to the top four, before missing just five games last time round as Klopp’s men replicated that finish, and indeed reached the Champions League final – Wijnaldum played in all but one of their matches in that competition as well.

Thus, it’s clear that he has been a key player for Klopp in recent years, but the arrival of the highly-rated duo of Fabinho and Keita looks set to push Wijnaldum down the pecking order at Anfield, and potentially out of the club altogether as per recent reports. And Newcastle must seek to take advantage.

After all, the 27-year-old excelled in a more advanced role both centrally and down the left side during his one-year stint at St James’ Park to score 11 times for the Magpies – there’s no reason why he couldn’t seek to do that again.

But with the added bonus of the Netherlands international being adept in a slightly deeper role as well, the options would be endless for Benitez in getting him into his team, at the same time significantly increasing the amount of quality in his squad - after all, he has been a regular at Liverpool in the last two years.

Thus, with reports suggesting that Wijnaldum could leave Anfield this summer, Newcastle must seek to bring the talented Dutchman back to St James’.
