Newcastle United supporters have been making a lot of noise in the Transfer Tavern in the last few days after seeing their team take a giant step closer to Premier League safety courtesy of a narrow 1-0 win over Huddersfield Town on Saturday.
Rafa Benitez’s men went into their clash with the Terriers having lost just one of their preceding six league matches, a run of form which moved them four points clear of the bottom three ahead of Saturday’s encounter. And the Magpies are now seven points clear of danger with just seven games of the season remaining as an Ayoze Perez goal ten minutes from time was enough to see off David Wagner’s Huddersfield, thus moving Newcastle up to 12th place in the division.
Subsequently, there has been many thrilled Magpies fans in the Tavern in recent times, several of whom are hoping that their team can maintain their recent run of form between now and the end of the season, and thus preserve their Premier League status.
Yet several of our resident Newcastle supporters are already looking ahead to the summer and what business their team may seek to complete if they remain in the top-flight, with many believing that their club should target a move for Swansea City attacker Jordan Ayew were the Swans to indeed go down.
Ultimately, the Ghana international has enjoyed a decent season at the Liberty Stadium in netting ten goals and laying on three assists in 38 appearances in all competitions, six goals and two assists of which coming in their battle against Premier League relegation.
And while they are hardly ground-breaking numbers from the 26-year-old, he has scored five of those six league goals in his last 12 appearances for Carlos Carvalhal’s side, and as such looks set to play a key part in their battle to avoid relegation this term.
Significantly though, Ayew’s tally of six league goals this term would place him atop of Newcastle’s goal-scoring charts, what with fellow forwards Perez and Dwight Gayle currently heading those with a mere five goals this season.
Thus, it’s pretty clear what Newcastle’s problems have been this season, and as such it’s pretty obvious what they simply must strengthen during the summer if they are to push on and climb the division next season.
With Joselu clearly not the goal-scorer required at this level, but able to contribute to other aspects of the game, Aleksandar Mitrovic’s future very much unclear heading into the summer, and loan signing Islam Slimani playing just 15 minutes for the club so far, there simply isn’t enough goals in this Magpies squad to take them to the next level.
Yet Ayew’s arrival could help move them in the right direction.
The 26-year-old has certainly been one of Swansea’s brightest players this term, and has clearly proven his worth at Premier League level in the last few months, as he did occasionally in a poor Aston Villa side in the years previous.
And were the Swans to go down, which became a more likely prospect after defeat at Manchester United on Saturday, he’ll likely be after a Premier League move.
As such, with Newcastle in need of further attacking talent, they must target the £6.3 million-rated ace (as per Transfermarkt) if Swansea drop to the Championship this season.
