Newcastle United supporters in the Transfer Tavern are very much hoping their side can add genuine quality to the squad during the summer transfer window, in a bid to build upon their tenth place Premier League finish.
Rafa Benitez’s men performed well upon their return to the top-flight to secure a top-half finish, having accumulated 44 points from their 38 matches. Yet based on their limitations over the course of the campaign, it’s clear that reinforcements will be needed over the summer months to take the club on another level next time round, and potentially challenge for the European spots come 12 months’ time.
Yet one man who could well be on his way out of St James’ Park this summer is captain Jamaal Lascelles, with recent reports linking him with a move to Champions League finalists Liverpool.
But Newcastle simply must demand £7.2 million-rated Liverpool star Danny Ings (as per Transfermarkt) as part of any deal involving Lascelles, so they at least get a player as well as cash out of losing one of their prized assets.
Ultimately, the 24-year-old defender played an integral part in helping keep Newcastle in the Premier League last season, and as such would without doubt be a huge loss to Benitez and the squad were he to leave for Anfield.
And while Ings would obviously not be a direct replacement for the centre back, demanding him in the deal would at least bolster their forward ranks, ranks that ultimately underperformed for much of the 2017/18 season.
The Magpies only managed 39 goals from their 38 Premier League games this term, only Burnley scored fewer of the sides in the top ten, with Ayoze Perez their top goal-scorer with ten – the only man to reach double figures.
And if they are serious about challenging for Europe next time round, they will simply have to score more goals, as although Burnley managed to do it having netted just 36 this season, their tally of 39 goals against was eight fewer than Benitez’s Magpies.
And Ings arrival could help them with that.
Ultimately, the one-time England international earned a move to Liverpool as a result of scoring 11 goals in 35 league games for Burnley in the 2014/15 season, thus underlining his capabilities in front of goal at the top level.
Yes, injuries have plagued his time at Anfield, and as such some of our resident Newcastle fans might be concerned whether he can regain his pre-injury form, but there’s little doubting from his time at Turf Moor, alongside the faith placed in him by Reds chief Jurgen Klopp at times this term, that he could do a job leading the line for the North East giants.
Clearly, Newcastle would be seriously helping Liverpool out were they to sell them Lascelles this summer, and as such the Magpies should demand the same gesture from the Reds, with Ings the man they should target as part of any deal for the Newcastle centre back.
