Newcastle United supporters have been in fine voice in the Transfer Tavern in the last few days after seeing their team all but secure their place in the Premier League next season courtesy of a 2-1 win at Leicester City.
Rafa Benitez’s men went into their clash with the Foxes and 2016 league champions on Saturday off the back of successive wins over Southampton and Huddersfield Town, results which set them well on their way to safety. And the Magpies moved ten points clear of the relegation zone on Saturday as goals from Jonjo Shelvey and Ayoze Perez sealed all three points at the King Power Stadium, although Claude Puel’s side did make them sweat as Jamie Vardy netted late on but ultimately in vain for the Midlands outfit.
Subsequently, there have been many delighted Newcastle fans in the Tavern in recent times, several of whom are supremely confident that their side will be playing in the top-flight next season after a run of just one defeat in their last seven matches.
In the meantime though, there has been much for our resident Magpies fans to get their teeth into, not least recent reports suggesting that West Brom striker Salomon Rondon could be available for £16.5 million this summer were the Baggies to go down.
And with that looking increasingly inevitable, Benitez’s side must seek to pay that reported asking price for the 23-goal ace as they seek to reinforce their striking ranks in a bid to move to the next level next season.
Ultimately, the biggest issue Newcastle have had this season is putting the ball in the back of the net, with the North East giants managing just 33 goals in their 32 Premier League games – only Burnley have scored fewer of sides in the top half of the division.
And with the club’s top-scorer Perez with just six so far, and fellow strikers Dwight Gayle and Joselu mustering just five and four respectively, it’s clear that they need to strengthen in the attacking department if they are to move to the next level under Benitez next season.
And while things haven’t necessarily worked for Rondon this term, he has proven his worth in the Premier League in recent seasons having scored 23 goals in 103 league appearances for the Baggies, nine of which coming in his first campaign back in 2015/16, before following that up with eight last term under Tony Pulis.
And despite his and West Brom’s obvious struggles this season, the Venezuela international has still mustered six goals in 31 games this time round, a tally which would see him sit top alongside Perez in Newcastle’s scoring charts.
Significantly though, it is what the 28-year-old would bring to general play which will be of interest to Benitez, as Rondon has similar all round abilities to that of Joselu, but ultimately has a sharper eye for goal than the Spaniard, much like fellow forward Gayle.
Clearly then, he’d be the perfect signing for Newcastle and Benitez this summer in their quest to move to the next level next season, and while £16.5 million may seem a little steep given he is part of a side cut adrift at the bottom of the division, that is the going rate for forward players nowadays.
As such, the Magpies must seek to land the 23-goal Premier League ace this summer.
