Newcastle United supporters have been in fine voice in the Transfer Tavern in the last few days after seeing their side put further distance between themselves and the Premier League’s bottom three with a 1-0 success over Huddersfield Town.
Rafa Benitez’s men went into their clash with their fellow top-flight strugglers having lost just one of their previous six league games, and sitting a healthy four points clear of the bottom three. And the Magpies took another step closer to Premier League safety on Saturday as an Ayoze Perez strike ten minutes from time sealed all three points for the North East giants, thus moving them a commanding eight points clear of the relegation zone with just seven matches of the campaign remaining.
Consequently, there have been many thrilled Newcastle supporters in the Tavern in recent times, several of whom are sincerely hoping that their team can continue their fine recent run between now and the end of the season, and thus preserve their top-flight status.
In the meantime though, there has been much for our resident Magpies fans to discuss, not least recent reports linking Aston Villa, Bournemouth, and Leicester City with a move for Southampton striker Charlie Austin if the Saints go down.
But with Newcastle evidently struggling in the striking department this term, they would surely solve their goal-scoring woes by landing the £10.8 million-rated ace (as per Transfermarkt) this summer.
Ultimately, the Magpies simply haven’t scored enough goals this season, with Benitez’s side having bagged just 31 goals in their 31 Premier League games so far this term, netting in excess of twice in a game on just three occasions.
Perez and Dwight Gayle currently top their goal-scoring charts with just five for the campaign, while fellow striker and number one for the majority of the first half of the season, Joselu, has managed only four goals thus far – it’s pretty clear what part of the squad needs serious strengthening this summer.
And were Southampton to lose their top-flight status this season, Austin could be exactly who Newcastle need to solve their goal-scoring woes.
The former Queens Park Rangers forward has scored six goals in just 17 appearances for the Saints this term, with injury restricting him to only six starts, yet still he tops their goal-scoring charts with just seven games of the campaign remaining.
And while some fans will be concerned by his recent injury record, it’s evident that Austin, when fit, will score goals at Premier League level, having done so for QPR back in the 2014/15 campaign, and indeed for Southampton in recent years.
And if Newcastle are eyeing the next level under Benitez in the coming years, they simply must address those goal-scoring worries, and Austin has the record to suggest that he could be that man.
As such, the Magpies must fend off the reported interest in the 28-year-old to lure him to St James’ Park this summer.
