Our Newcastle fans here in the Transfer Tavern cannot get over their great win against Brighton last night – a victory that saw them return to the top of the league.
It was a fascinating affair as both sides had chances to win the game – largely reflecting the see-saw title race we’ve seen up to now.
The Magpies were the victors, though, and our landlord reckons they’ll be very hard to stop now with that kind of momentum behind them going into the rest of the season.
Indeed, things got going late on for the Magpies as Mohamed Diame grabbed the equaliser before Ayoze Perez’s winner in the final minutes with the former’s goal coming in incredible circumstances.
A sliced volley from Christian Atsu ricocheted off of Diame and looped into the net in very fortunate circumstances – something that was not lost on the midfielder.
He said to NUTV after the game (as quoted by Chronicle Live’s live NUFC blog 10:03🙂
“I see Atsu taking the volley and I was looking to go to the second ball. He shot, the ball came to me and I tried to volley. I got lucky.
“I got lucky (with the goal) but I think we deserved it. When we came back at half-time.”
It was fortunate, indeed, but sometimes you need that slice of luck in a title race.
And it’s a title race, now, that the Magpies will be confident of winning once May arrives.
