According to TalkSPORT, it’s been over a year since Miguel Almiron last registered a goal or assist – and now Alan Brazil has had a pop at his ‘murder’ return for Newcastle.
Almiron, who signed back in January for a then-club-record £20m, has yet to open his goalscoring account for the Magpies, with the standout feature since his arrival being his poor return in front of goal.
The attacking midfielder was billed as a promising asset by MLS pundits who had been watching Almiron dominate the US league with his flair and exciting style of play, but since moving to the Premier League, he has so far failed to replicate that form.
As a result, speaking on his TalkSPORT breakfast show, Brazil did not hold back when discussing Almiron’s inability to score at St. James’ Park.
“I was watching him [on Monday night] and I couldn’t believe it,” he said.
“He’s had more shots without scoring than any other player in the Premier League.
“22 shots this season and he hasn’t scored once; he is still yet to score once, 41 shots, or register his first assist – stick him in goal!
“That’s murder, isn’t it? How can you have stats like that? Give us a break.”
Indeed, the South American has had a tough time cementing his quality in the final third – with his latest blank coming against Aston Villa on Monday night.
Their 2-1 win against Bournemouth prior to their Villa defeat away from home was also evidence of Almiron’s perceived unluckiness – with the 25-year-old blasting a goalbound shot against Saint-Maximin who was in the way, spurning a great chance to get off and running.
However, moments of quality have been there, when he played a heavy hand in the Magpies’ opening goal against the Cherries, for example – but if he wants to redeem his hefty price tag, he’ll need to register a more crucial impact sooner rather than later.
