Former Aston Villa player Alan Hutton has some advice for Newcastle United defender Ciaran Clark if he wants guaranteed minutes on the pitch.
Speaking to Football Insider, Hutton explained that Clark may need to leave the Magpies if he wants to resurrect his career, hinting that the Republic of Ireland international is no longer a priority in the pecking order.
Now, the 34-year-old has some words of wisdom for his former teammate, stating that the time could be right to exit St James Park in search of guaranteed minutes on the pitch.
“Sometimes you need a change of manager or something happens to fall in your favour to give you the chance you probably deserve. I hope he does well because I believe he’s a very good player,” explained Hutton to Football Insider.
“It’s a difficult one. When he left he signed a five-year deal so he’s obviously moved everything up there and got settle so he maybe found it difficult to up sticks and leave again. The only problem is that he’s at an age where he should be playing week in, week out.
“It’s different if you’re 21, 22 and you’re thinking: ‘I’ll wait about for a couple of seasons,’ but when you start going 26, 27, 28, 29, you need to be playing every week. I hope he can get a run and maybe that’s him in the team. If not, he’s maybe going to have to look to leave.”
Considering Clark’s struggle for game-time of late, Hutton is justified in advising him to contemplate a change of scenery.
The 30-year-old has seemingly fallen out of favour, which is in sharp contrast to the impact he made upon signing for the Magpies three years ago, with the centre-back amassing 34 starts in his first season for the club as they earned promotion to the Premier League.
However, with subsequent defensive additions such as Fabian Schar, Clark has found himself on the fringes.
Indeed, Hutton may have a point, it could be time for his ex-teammate to make the move away from Tyneside, given his lack of game-time under Bruce of late.
