A bittersweet night was in store for Ayoze Perez on Saturday.

While he continued his best goal-scoring form for Newcastle United, scoring his 5th goal in 3 games with a devastating strike, the goal itself took its toll on him.

The Spaniard was already struggling before further aggravating his problems with the 33rd-minute strike. A few minutes later, Rafa Benitez had to drag him off after what looked like worrying signs. Just when the sun was beginning to shine brightly on Perez, another problem clouded over the brightness.

After staying injury-free all season long, the problems started to cramp up at the worst possible scenario. One can understand why he’s picking up knocks now. Perez has been giving his absolute 100% in recent games, resulting in him scoring such wonderful strikes. However, he’s working himself to the limit and putting in an enhanced effort which could’ve resulted in picking up the injury.

While it’s yet to be seen whether he plays any more part this season, he has to work on his fitness next season. If Perez wants to be a top goal-scorer in the exhausting Premier League, he’ll need to utilize his strengths cleverly. If that meant wasting less energy and being more predatorial in the final third, so be it.

Just like other top-quality Premier League strikes, Perez needs to get his priorities in order. If he wants to maintain peak goal-scoring consistency, the Spaniard will need to be smart, take his chances better and be careful with not allowing his work-rate to end in vain.

Hopefully, for him, a potential blow hasn't curtailed the best form of his career for good.
