According to TEAMtalk, Newcastle are plotting a £20m bid for struggling Liverpool striker Danny Ings.
The England international has had a tough time at Liverpool since moving from Burnley in 2015, making under 20 appearances in three seasons. While Klopp has been quick to praise him in the past, saying he is an important member of the squad, the reality is that Ings (valued at £7.2m by Transfermarkt) will want as much game time as possible.
Newcastle would be a perfect destination for Ings. The Magpies recently signed Salomon Rondon on loan from West Brom, and Ings would be the perfect player to complement the Venezuelan up front, or battle for a place alongside Ayoze Perez in the Newcastle attack.
Although Ings has had a tough few seasons with injuries, it still seems unlikely that he would have been picked ahead of Roberto Firmino, Sadio Mane and Mo Salah. With Daniel Sturridge looking like he will be staying and Liverpool this season, as well as Divock Origi, Ings’ playing time may be even more limited. He must know that his chances of featuring prominently in this Liverpool side are limited, and should therefore be keen to push this Newcastle deal through.
Newcastle have been quiet throughout this transfer window, with Rafa Benitez making his opinions known about the club’s transfer policy. He has also emphasised the importance of recruiting new players. Ings would be a crucial statement, not only to Newcastle fans, but to the rest of the Premier League, showing the club’s intentions for the rest of the season. It would also surely please Rafa Benitez in his ongoing feud with Mike Ashley.
With less than one day remaining in the transfer window, Newcastle must strike as soon as possible to land Ings.
