According to a report from Sky Sports via the Chronicle [14:19], Newcastle United have turned down an approach from Blackburn Rovers for out of favour winger Christian Atsu – prompting due outrage from Magpies supporters.
Atsu, who has started six games for Newcastle in the league this season, with the majority of his appearances coming from the bench, was handed the opportunity to show his worth following star winger Allan Saint-Maximin’s hamstring injury but didn’t appear to take full advantage – with just three league assists to his name this campaign.
The Ghanaian, with Saint-Maximin having recovered, looks set to be cast to the fringes of the team following the arrival of Valentino Lazaro – with this latest bid from Blackburn potentially being the resolution to his game-time conundrum on Tyneside. Compared to Saint-Maximin, bar assists, Atsu doesn’t measure up to the Frenchman’s creativity – with the Nice summer signing accumulating a superior 4.2 dribbles per game, 1.2 key passes and 1.5 efforts on goal, as per WhoScored.com.
As a result, some Newcastle fans feel that Blackburn’s interest was a prime opportunity to cash in on Atsu – lashing out when hearing the news that the club rejected their bid. There is reportedly fresh interest from Celtic, so Atsu could still be a late deadline day exit, but fans were furious at the earlier news…
That rivals Joe Kinnear as worst decision of the Ashley era
