Newcastle United fans can be optimistic following their mid-season revival under Rafael Benitez.

Things were looking bleak following a dismal start to the campaign after a summer of little investment in the playing squad. The Magpies were struggling immensely before stringing three wins together to steer them away from the Premier League relegation zone. Benitez remains confident that he will keep the Tyneside club in England’s top division.

The January window is now less than a month away, and Benitez would be wise to bolster his ranks ahead of a season-defining period.

One man who should be on his shortlist is Nottingham Forest star – Joe Lolley. Valued at just £450k by Transfermarkt, the winger has been a key player for Aitor Karanka this season and has attracted plenty of interest from Premier League clubs as a result. Reports in Nottinghamshire LIVE suggest that Newcastle will join Cardiff and Fulham in the race for his signature when the transfer window reopens.

Lolley has been in excellent form this season, scoring six and assisting seven for the Reds, his four-assist haul during the 5-5 draw with Aston Villa gave fans a glimpse of his creative ability. Primarily operating from the right wing, the 26-year-old is also comfortable on the left giving Benitez more options as he looks to rotate his squad. With the Magpies struggling for goals, Lolley’s arrival could be the answer to all their problems.

Fans may feel this would be an underwhelming signing, but Lolley is a player that suits Benitez to a tee. Under the Spaniard’s leadership, the Englishman could prove to be an astute piece of business.

Newcastle fans, thoughts?
