The Newcastle United fans in the Transfer Tavern haven’t stopped celebrating ever since Mike Ashley officially put the club up for sale yesterday afternoon. Indeed, our Geordie contingent have little love for the Sports Direct mogul and can’t wait to see the back of him after well over a decade.
While things are going pretty well for the Magpies right now, Ashley has never been hugely popular on Tyneside after two relegations during his tenure in ownership of the club, so seeing him depart and Rafa Benitez backed in the market would be just what the doctor ordered in the North East.
Still, it’s not the only thing to talk about at the club right now. According to the Daily Star, the club tried to sell Dwight Gayle over the course of the summer, only for it to fail as Fulham’s reported £12m bid failed to meet their valuation. Considering the 27-year-old’s status at St. James’ Park last year, it’s strange to see him fall from grace so quickly.
With Joselu impressing in terms of his all-round game, the former Crystal Palace marksman has had to do with a place on the bench for most of the campaign and his performances thus far have largely frustrated the punters clad in black and white.
The Premier League just looks like a level too far for Gayle. While he’ll always be celebrated for his goals in taking the Toon back into the Premier League, he just doesn’t offer enough from the bench. Should be sold in January.
