Certain reshuffles are required at Newcastle United to help them challenge the giants once again.
Indeed, hard decisions need to be made and Rafa Benitez is seemingly (as per the Sun) ready to make them, granted he gets the proper financial support to sign proper replacements for the players he shows the door to.
Matt Ritchie is one player who could leave Tyneside next season after failing to agree to a new contract. While the left-winger is crucial to how the Magpies operate, Benitez doesn’t seem to be worried, already lining up potential replacements for him.
Obviously, the Scotland international has been a big part of the club’s rise from the Championship and is a hugely popular figure amongst fans on Tyneside, but these are the hard decisions the club have to make at this point. Things need to change and change is hard at times.
So, according to reports (via Daily Star), Dwight McNeil is the latest player to have caught the Spaniard’s eye.
The Burnley star is a versatile player, having the ability to operate in an array of positions in attack. He’s scored 3 goals and assisted 5 in 16 appearances for the Clarets, helping them claw through their problems to avoid relegation. A promising youngster, he’d certainly be a statement signing.
The 19-year-old’s been their breakthrough star, showcasing extreme potential with his clever movement, link-up play and creativity in the final third. As such, one can see why Benitez wants him as Richie’s replacement. He has a real eye for goal and is dangerous with his crossing, incisive passing in the final third.
Now, the Toon fans reading this might be somewhat cynical. Yes, Newcastle are clearly a much bigger club than the Clarets, but why would he move right now, considering the relative stringency of the Ashley era? All valid points.
However, if they do make a move, it could be a sign of the end to the Sports Direct mogul’s previous way of thinking. Making ambitious signings from divisional rivals, that’s not happened at St. James’ in years.
It could be exciting stuff for Newcastle fans as Mike Ashley changing his ways could be huge for the club on the transfer front, with ambitious signings helping them challenge further up the table.
The 19-year-old could become an upgrade on Ritchie if honed well and will ravish playing under a more encouraging attacking role at Newcastle. If they hope for a brighter future, they need blooming youngsters like McNeil, who’s ambitious attitude and youthful exuberance can help the Magpies play some fearless attacking football next season.
