Newcastle United: Fans call for change after U21s beaten by Macclesfield

A selection of Newcastle United supporters have been calling for changes to be made after the Magpies’ Under-21s were beaten 2-1 by Macclesfield Town in the opening game of their EFL Trophy campaign.

Newcastle were drawn in Group D of the EFL Trophy alongside Macclesfield, Port Vale and Shrewsbury Town as they look to repeat last season’s foray into the knockout stages of the tournament, having topped Group G without dropping a point to Notts County, Doncaster Rovers or Grimsby Town.

Neil Redfearn’s side will need favourable results from here on to progress, however, as they were dominated for much of the game by their League Two opposition on Tuesday night despite a positive start to proceedings.

Luke Charman made a promising run down the right-hand side early on to find Kyle Scott, but Yannick Toure’s header was fired straight at Reice Charles-Cook in the hosts’ net.

Macclesfield then ramped up the pressure as the Silkmen took the lead when David Fitzpatrick let rip from around 35 yards out and saw his effort rocket past Jake Turner.

Newcastle continued to be wasteful with their share of possession in the opening half, but turned the tide following the break when Charman curled a delightful left-footed effort into the top corner to draw the Magpies level.

It would be short-lived though, as Macclesfield again pulled ahead, this time through on-loan Nottingham Forest striker Virgil Gomes, who arrived in the Toon box to tap home from eight yards out following a defensive lapse by the visitors.

Newcastle fans have been left venting their frustrations at the result on social media, with the North East outfit joint-third in Group D after Port Vale beat Shrewsbury 2-1.
