While Newcastle United’s team isn’t a huge amount to shout about right now, the fact that Rafa Benitez has them working so well really is a miracle on Tyneside. Sitting 9th in the league, life is good for our punters clad in black and white.
Still, an injury to key midfielder Mikel Merino looked to rid the side of some quality during the loss to Burnley on Monday night and reports suggest Benitez is considering calling in a man from the cold as a potential replacement for the crocked Spaniard.
Indeed, according to the Chronicle, flop midfielder Henri Saivet could be in line for a surprise recall. The Senegalese international has barely featured for the Toon Army since his arrival in January 2016, spending last season on loan with St Etienne.
However, the midfielder is thought to have been training in an effort to impress, with Mo Diame not doing much to justify his starting berth at Turf Moor earlier this week.
As you can imagine, the jury remains out on Saivet, though he can’t do much worse than Diame.
Why not? There’s no point in not calling on Saivet, who actually looked decent enough during his only real game against Everton well over a year ago now. Diame didn’t do much against Burnley so there’s certainly an improvement to be made.
