Following the news that first-choice goalkeeper Martin Dubravka will be on the sidelines for a while with a knee injury, many Magpie fans have been discussing who should replace the 31-year-old in the upcoming FA Cup quarter-final against Manchester City.
Freddie Woodman has put in a series of impressive performances on loan at Championship side Swansea City. The 23-year-old has featured in 37 games for the Swans, keeping 11 clean sheets and only conceding 45 goals (Transfermarkt).
In contrast, backup keeper Karl Darlow has played in 4 FA Cup matches, only keeping 1 clean sheet and conceding 5 goals (Transfermarkt).
Rob Elliott hasn’t made a single appearance for Steve Bruce’s Black and Whites all season and unsurprisingly several supporters aren’t keen on the 33-year-old facing a formidable Manchester City attack (Transfermarkt).
Naturally, some fans have argued Woodman should be recalled but The Chronicle reports the recall option attached to his loan can’t be triggered outside the transfer window. Perhaps after his successful spell in Wales, it is likely the youngster will get a chance to test himself in the English top tier in the future, though it won’t be now.

Check out some of the mixed reactions down below…
Elliot hasn’t played in like 2 years. There’s no way he’d be thrown straight into a Quarter Final against a side like City

No, Darlow needs a run of games under his belt

Just Darlow for everything until Dubravka comes back

Don’t even think about it

I hope so, said for months it’s a shame that Rob keeps getting overlooked he has been rusting away. Not knocking Darlo but if the club won’t play him I’d be looking for a transfer to the lower leagues for starting keeper.
