A selection of Newcastle United supporters were left underwhelmed by Paul Dummett’s efforts against Brighton & Hove Albion on Saturday, despite the Chronicle deeming his game worthy of a seven out of ten rating.
Dummett began his seventh successive outing of the campaign (TransferMarkt) as Steve Bruce’s left centre-half in a three-man line alongside Fabian Schar and Jamaal Lascelles, before briefly moving to fill the left-back slot when Jetro Willems was pushed into a midfield role.
The former Wales international later returned to his centre-half duties, but was again deployed in his more natural position on the side once Andy Carroll was awarded his second Magpies debut and Newcastle shifted formation once more.
Brighton’s pace in attack proved to be an issue for Dummett, however, as Neal Maupay was able to blitz his way beyond the Newcastle upon Tyne-born 27-year-old following a through ball beyond the Toon’s last man, but Dummett’s blushes were saved when the Seagulls striker lashed his effort straight at Martin Dubravka.
What impressed the Chronicle the most was Dummett’s long-play, as he knew it would ‘be one of those days’ where he would not be able to try anything smart.
In total, though, WhoScored only deemed nine of Dummett’s 46 passes on Saturday as long balls, and recorded Schar completing the same amount.
The statistics company also registered Dummett winning his sole attempted tackle, penning two interceptions and four clearances – the joint-second most clearances, only behind Lascelles and Lewis Dunk by one.
Dummett also won each of his three aerial duels, and recorded a key ball from his 26 accurate passes – 68% of his total efforts.
The quality of his attempted passes was one gripe some Newcastle fans had of Dummett’s game, despite 33 of his balls being forward passes, ten of which were in the final third of the pitch.
