It’s been 12 years since Newcastle United last travelled to Sheffield for a Premier League game, with supporters having to cast their minds all the way back to their 2-1 win in 2007, a match where Steven Taylor nicked a late winner and sent the Magpies away end into raptures.
Glenn Roeder’s Newcastle side were severely underachieving back then, falling into the bottom half of the table after partially being expected to push for a European place given their involvement in the UEFA Cup, with a moment of magic separating them from dropping even more points away to struggling Sheffield United.
Who is Newcastle's best defender?
Neil Warnock’s side were bang in the middle of one of the most thrilling relegation battles in Premier League history, locked neck in neck with fellow strugglers West Ham in a bid to avoid the drop.
The rest, as they say, is history – with the Hammers beating Manchester United at Old Trafford on the last day and condemning the Blades to over a decade outside England’s top flight – and Taylor’s late winner at Bramall Lane for Newcastle was partially responsible.
Here’s how Magpies supporters reminisced better times without Mike Ashley’s ownership.
A couple of months before the devil arrived at SJP.
