After Newcastle United were turned over 4-1 away to Manchester United on another Boxing Day to forget, most of the goals seemingly coming from defensive errors, some supporters have criticised young midfielder Matty Longstaff despite scoring yet another goal against the Red Devils.
The 19-year-old also found the net on his first ever start against Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s side back in early October, erupting the Gallowgate End with a fierce strike past David De Gea to gift the Magpies an unlikely win.
However, despite firing a driven effort early in the first half to give Newcastle another unlikely lead, scoring his second goal in two games against United, another fairy tale ending wasn’t on the cards – with quickfire goals from Anthony Martial, Mason Greenwood and Marcus Rashford putting the home side in cruise control.
Longstaff, along with his brother Sean, appeared to have a difficult night in midfield despite the early heroics – with some supporters criticising the youngster’s form – here’s what they had to say on Twitter.
Both shouldn’t play together at the minute. No experience in that midfield killed us. In a game where you need to battle you can’t possibly drop Hayden. Think he got it totally wrong, Man U away is a winnable game for any team in this league.
