The Newcastle United fans here in the Transfer Tavern are in a state of misery as they discuss their goalkeeping options for the rest of the campaign. Indeed, neither Rob Elliot or Karl Darlow have at all impressed so far, costing Rafa Benitez and his dearly.
Over the course of the summer, the Toon Army were linked with moves for goalkeepers such as Pepe Reina and Willy Caballero, though nothing came of them and Benitez had to make do with two shot-stoppers who have never truly convinced in the Premier League.
With that in mind, comments from a report in the Times have shed some light on the matter. They claim that, after a move for Caballero was blocked by the board, both Elliot and Darlow know they are unwanted at St. James’ Park. For the punters clad in black and white in our bar, they sure are playing like it.
With Freddie Woodman waiting in the wings, the Newcastle fans in our bar are hoping Benitez drafts the young England hopeful into the side.
It must be hard for Darlow and Elliot to know they aren’t the first choice, though both need to improve. Darlow, in particular, has cost his side dearly already this season and can’t afford another clanger.
