Newcastle United owner Mike Ashley has come under heavy fire from a large number of the Toon Army after the businessman attempted to keep Sports Direct open during these troubling times, as per Press Association via the Daily Mail.
The Frasers Group board initially said all stores would keep their doors open to customers because selling sportswear and fitness equipment makes Sports Direct a vital asset, despite British prime minister Boris Johnson ordering all non-essential shops to close.
However, following an intervention from the UK government, Ashley was forced to take a step back and retract his plans (Mail).
Chief financial officer Chris Wootton revealed that the shops would not stay open after all.
Ashley has been the repeated subject of the Toon Army’s ire throughout his tenure in charge at St James’ Park, and it is highly unlikely this latest mistake will do him any favours in the eyes of many supporters.
However, one Geordie pointed out, there is a silver lining. The fan tweeted: “But the one positive thing is that now EVERYONE has seen what we have been dealing with for years. Not one care about his staff. Not one care about the public. His care is his pocket, always has been and always will be.”
Take a look at the backlash on Twitter below…
Wasting government time in a time of national crisis. Shame on him.

This all points to what kind of human being we’ve been dealing with at #nufc.
Mike Ashley detests his fellow man. Now the whole country can see it.
It’s always been about his beloved Sports Direct and money. He is fundamentally awful.

I hope the masses remember this when everything gets back to normal. Boycott anything to do with the parasite.

People like Rio/Keys/Simon Jordan will still defend him to the death. Ashley is scum, we all know it and most football fans know it. Shame we can’t get rid of him.
