According to a report from The Sun earlier this month, Bournemouth are lining up a £13m bid for ex-Newcastle youngster Ivan Toney following his good run of form for Peterborough United in League One, with Twitter account NUFC 360 hinting it could’ve been the wrong decision to sell him.
Toney, who has bagged a noteworthy 23 goals in 31 outings for Peterborough in England’s third tier (Transfermarkt), is now attracting Premier League interest as the youngster’s reputation continues to ascend. Former Newcastle boss Rafael Benitez previously made the decision to let Toney leave St James’ Park at the beginning of last season, selling him for a £648,000 fee.
Now, with the Cherries reportedly considering a £13m bid, a debate has cropped up on social media over whether it was the right decision to let him go. Current Magpies strikers Joelinton and Andy Carroll have mustered just one league goal between them this season (WhoScored), with many Newcastle fans seemingly desperate to bring in a prolific forward.
Were Newcastle too quick to sell Ivan Toney?
However, judging by these replies, Toney does not seem like the answer, especially when you consider all of his goals have come in the lower leagues. Here’s what they had to say on Twitter.
BREAKING: Player does well two divisions below. Former manager was wrong to let him go. Get real. Seriously. No disrespect to League 1 teams. But the gulf in class is massive. If Rooney starts scoring plenty for Derby were united wrong to let him go? What a joke this is.

He’s scoring goals in League 1 though…can’t fault a Premier League team for letting him go. I doubt he’ll kick a ball in the Premier League for the rest of his career.

There’s a massive gap between League 1 and the Prem. Look at Dan Barlaser ripping it up for Rotherham.

Or he is just scoring goals in a league two divisions below. A PL team being after him doesn’t mean he is PL quality. The lad hasn’t even done it in the Championship…like a Dwight Gayle for instance.
