Jamaal Lascelles is a doubt for Newcastle United’s Carabao Cup tie against Leicester City, as reported by the club’s official Twitter page.
The 25-year-old picked up a calf injury during the 1-0 win away against Tottenham Hotspur, coming off in the 82nd minute.
Steve Bruce has stated that he is taking the Carabao Cup seriously, as reported by The Chronicle, but he may have to be without his captain against the Foxes.
Lascelles has played in all three of Newcastle’s matches so far this season, amassing a total of 262 minutes, as per WhoScored.
The Newcastle skipper is currently ninth in the Premier League for the average number of interceptions made, with 2.7 per game, which shows how proficient he has been in using his intelligence to cut out opposition moves – he has also made 1 tackle and 5.7 interceptions per game, while averaging 4 aerial duels won.
The 25-year-old has also been effective with the ball at his feet, completing 86.1% of his attempted passes across the campaign so far.
He has already shown this campaign that he is a vital component of Newcastle’s defensive shape, which is only accentuated by the fact he is club captain.
Bruce should not risk Lascelles for the game against Leicester, as him being a doubt now means it is highly unlikely he would be fully fit by Wednesday night.
While it is admirable that the club is looking to push forward and win a trophy, this shouldn’t be done at the risk of aggravating the injury of one of the club’s most influential players, because if Lascelles has a lengthy period out that would be highly detrimental for the club’s Premier League campaign.
