Newcastle United: Joelinton deal could rise to £47.5m

Newcastle United have made a move for Hoffenheim striker Joelinton in a deal that could cost as much as €53 million (£47.5 million), according to German outlet Bild, via The Boot Room.

The Daily Mail had previously reported that the deal would cost £36 million, but with add-ons and a potential rise in the base cost, Mike Ashley will need to dig deeper into his pockets than had been expected if the transfer is to happen.

If the move is completed, it will see Newcastle break their transfer record for the second time in six months, having not previously done so since 2005.

One of the most exciting factors of this move would be to see Joelinton link up with the current record signing, Miguel Almiron.

The Paraguayan, who joined from MLS champions Atlanta United, started nine Premier League games and came on as a substitute once after joining in January.

He may not have got a goal or assist, but there were definitely hints of the creative spark that brought him to Newcastle in the first place, as he made 1.3 key passes per game, 0.7 crosses and completed 0.7 dribbles while being fouled 1.7 times per game (as per WhoScored).

This is where the Brazilian comes in, as at 186cm tall he has the physical capabilities to get on the end of any crosses, while he can also bring Almiron into the game from long balls, having won 2.3 aerial duels per match last season.

Joelinton scored 10 goals and assisted five times in 26 starts and four substitute appearances in all competitions in 2018/19, while also completing 1.5 key passes and 1.7 dribbles per game.

This shows that the 22-year-old can make the most of Almiron’s creativity to get himself on the score sheet, but he should also help enhance his new teammate’s influence in key areas with his own ability to make things happen — if he joins, of course.

It can be considered a risk for Newcastle to spend so much money on one player, especially when the squad is in need of strengthening.

However, the idea of having Joelinton link up with Almiron is a very exciting one for the Magpies, which should result in goals if the deal is completed.

With Ayoze Perez and Salomon Rondon no longer around, this is the type of player the club should be looking to bring in.
