Despite proving to be a key man in Newcastle’s return to the top flight three seasons ago, midfielder Jonjo Shelvey hasn’t been at the forefront of this side for a while – but he could be offered a new contract imminently.
Does Jonjo Shelvey deserve a new contract?
The Englishman has made an impact in the games he has played, most notably scoring a stunning free-kick away to West Ham at the weekend, but those have been few and far between – especially since the start of the 2018/2019 season – with the likes of the Longstaff brothers, Sean and Matty, coming through and taking his spot in the starting eleven.
However, according to The Mirror via The Chronicle [12:32], Shelvey looks set to be offered a new contract along with teammates Isaac Hayden and Matt Ritchie – with long-term deals for the Longstaff brothers also.
The news will come as a shock to some Magpies supporters, who have been underwhelmed with his contribution over the last year – evident from their reception during his sub-par first-half performance against Brighton back in September.
One question remains for a lot of Tynesiders – what has Shelvey done to earn being awarded a new contract? Bar the occasional moment, he’s only started five games this season and was dropped by Rafa Benitez last season, during which he only started 10 games.
That being said, the 27-year-old is definitely capable of producing moments of magic as he proved in East London. If he can keep producing moments like that, he can certainly prove a useful option in the club’s squad.
