Newcastle United lynchpin injured in training before being taken to hospital – Report

The Newcastle United fans in the Transfer Tavern have been all over the place in their collective thinking of Jonjo Shelvey this season.

Indeed, the England international seriously annoyed our Geordie contingent during the opening game of the campaign, following his stupid sending off after stamping on Dele Alli during the opening day home loss to Tottenham Hotspur.

During his suspension, the form of loan star Mikel Merino had many our resident Toon fans debating as to whether or not the 25-year-old would even get back into the squad, though he did provide a lovely assist for Joselu in the 1-1 draw with Liverpool last weekend.

So, reports from the Scottish Sun have actually served as relatively unwelcome ones. They claim the former Swansea City man has broken his finger in training and was yesterday rushed to hospital for an X-ray.

However, the injury may not rule him out of next weekend’s trip down to Southampton, as long as his cast is lightweight, with many of our punters eager to see him deployed in a midfield three, alongside Merino and Isaac Hayden.

Landlord’s Verdict:

If Newcastle can get the best out of Shelvey, there’s even a case he can make a late dash for the England squad. We saw last night that Gareth Southgate’s side were just awful and boring to watch, so an imaginative passer such as Shelvey could help.

Still, it’s down to the player to get his head sorted first.
