Newcastle United: Magpies extend Federico Fernandez’s contract by one year - Newcastle United

A whole host of the Toon Army have gone wild over the latest news that Newcastle United have taken up the one-year option to extend Federico Fernandez’s contract with the club, keeping the defender at St. James’ Park until the end of next season.

Fernandez, who moved to Tyneside from Swansea City in August 2018, has been a defensive stalwart for Steve Bruce’s Black and Whites this season, making 25 appearances in all competitions, scoring 2 goals and providing 1 assist (Transfermarkt).

The 31-year-old won 32 caps for Argentina, scoring 2 goals for La Albiceleste, and making it all the way to the 2014 World Cup final. Fernandez has also played for Serie A side Napoli and La Liga team Getafe (Transfermarkt).

Speaking to NUFCTV via the club’s official website the Argentinian said “hopefully now we can push for the last few games to try to get more points, and I’m very happy about the news.

He added “to stay in the Premier League, to stay here and feel important, that for me is the main point – to be fit, try to help the club and try to push in every game I can play.”
