Loads of Newcastle United supporters have been reflecting on Rob Lee’s legendary career after a fan uploaded vintage footage of the club announcing his arrival.
After moving to St. James’ Park from Charlton Athletic for just shy of £1m, Lee went on to score 44 goals in over 300 appearances for the Geordies, famously scoring a hat-trick against Royal Antwerp as Newcastle won 5-0 away (Chronicle).
Although Kevin Keegan’s Black and Whites missed out on winning their first top division title since 1927, despite being 10 points ahead of Sir Alex Ferguson’s Manchester United at Christmas, Lee was named in the PFA Team of the Year at the end of the 1995/96 season. He eventually left Tyneside for Derby County before calling time on his career at Wycombe Wanderers in 2006 (Transfermarkt).
The former England international is still fondly regarded by the Toon Army for his impressive performances throughout the years, with many singing his praises on Twitter, and one supporter even called him “the greatest player in our history.”

I don’t read much (at all), but flew through his autobiography, better than Shearer for me! Always said bury me in a toon top with Lee 7 on the back!
