According to a report from Portuguese outlet O Jogo, Newcastle United may have reignited their interest in bringing former Rafa Benitez target Ricardo Horta to St. James’ Park following their shortage of goals this campaign – with the winger’s impressive 13 goal haul being a real stand out attraction.
Horta, who scored against the Magpies during a pre-season outing back in the summer of 2018, appears to have recaptured the attention of club officials who are reportedly keen on making him a Newcastle player after ex-boss Benitez supposedly planned a swoop, at least according to Time 24 News.
The 25-year-old has impressed for SC Braga this campaign also, scoring 13 goals and assisting six others from midfield in all competitions so far this season (as per Transfermarkt). When compared to current Magpies favourite Allan Saint-Maximin, who is currently sidelined due to injury and has just one goal this season, Horta has amassed more shots per game (2.9) and has been dispossessed fewer times on average than the Frenchman (1.2), as per WhoScored.
Even though Newcastle’s cult hero appears to be the superior take-on specialist, one thing that Saint-Maximin hasn’t returned on so far is goals and assists – with Horta clearly displaying his ruthlessness when it comes to finding the net and assisting his teammates.
The Magpies’ front three have suffered from a short return so far this season, with Miguel Almiron, Joelinton and Saint-Maximin scoring a combined league total of four strikes. With that in mind, Horta’s impressive goal return could potentially be the key in unlocking more firepower if Steve Bruce’s side are looking to secure their safety in the top flight.
